Catalogue Note

This interior was painted by production designer Stalen Nikandrovich Volkov for the 1958 film production of The Idiot. The work represents both the talent of its author and the labor once required of a production designer. Volkov has gone on to design for a number of other films, including The Brothers Karamazov (1969) and Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1993).
