Catalogue Note
As critic P. Barkhan wrote, "Shukhaev is a native Russian, and all his years worked in Paris will not change this fact. He is, perhaps, the only artist working in Paris who did not adapt to any French styles, traditions or movements. He is a devout Russian without even emphasizing it" (Die Kunst, 1925). The present work is dated 1929, a time when Shukhaev painted quite intensely. His landscapes circa 1930 were created during trips to the South of France and Corsica, and they are quite distinct from the landscapes of his contemporaries. Shukhaev's palette is reserved and his brushstroke is delicate, reflecting the subtle tranquility of the country by the sea.
