Catalogue Note
The Symbolist artist Victor Zamirailo studied art at the Kiev Art School under N. I. Murashko from 1881 to 1886, while being also advised by the artist Mikhail Vrubel (1883-1889). Between 1911 and 1924, Zamirailo participated in the World of Art exhibitions. Beginning in 1885, he painted murals for various churches in Kiev and other cities and he also decorated the Kazan train station in Moscow. In the late 1890s, he worked as a book illustrator and from 1905 to 1906 he created drawings for pre-Revolutionary satirical journals.
The present lot, which reflects Zamirailo's interest in Symbolism, is a study for a cover design for the 1911 issue of the journal Zerkalo (Mirror).
