Catalogue Note
Alexei Alexandrovich Pisemsky was a master of the landscape genre. Having trained in the realist style of the Kostroma School, he was later accepted to the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, where he earned several awards and further refined his painterly skills. He soon developed a reputation for his exquisite drawings and watercolors, and he participated in various exhibitions with Russian and foreign aquarellists throughout his lifetime. Perhaps his greatest masterpieces, however, were his large scale oil paintings of the rural countryside, where he eloquently portrayed the awesome spirit of man's position in nature. These works he exhibited alongside the Peredvizhniki (or Wanderers), who considered him one of the most talented Russian painters of the late 19th century.
