Catalogue Note
Born in Kazan, Nikolai Fechin first worked in his father's gilding and joinery workshop, where he was exposed to the art of the Russian icon. He later studied painting in St. Petersburg and spent two years in Ilya Repin's studio. Above all else, he was a profound colorist. With his characteristic and reserved palette, he crafted precise color tones that appear to glow, and he thereby infused his canvas with a charming luminosity.
