Catalogue Note

This likeness of prominent divisionist Italian painter Giovanni Segantini was modeled in 1894 during Troubetzkoy's early stay in Milan when Segantini visited his studio. Troubetzkoy was then in his late 20's and would soon leave for Russia. The two met through the Bugatti family as Giovanni Segantini was related to the young Rembrandt Bugatti who was then a pupil of Troubetzkoy. This portrait bust is an especially notable example of Troubetzkoy's early work, modeled in the late nineteenth century, before he achieved fame in the twentieth century as a fashionable society portrait artist. This present cast was executed in 1915 during Troubetzkoy's  American sojourn, specifically for his personal exhibitions in the United States, by Bertelli's Roman Bronze Works, then established in Brooklyn,  New York.
