Catalogue Note
Most probably a gift to a member of the Russian Imperial court from the Emir of Bokhara. A similar chest from the India Early Minshall Collection was sold by Christies, New York, April 12th, 1988, lot 64. This latter chest was documented as a gift from the Emir of Bokhara to the daughters of Tsar Nicholas II on the occasion of the Romanov Tercentenary in 1913.
Following the domination of Bokara by Imperial Russia in the 1860's, the Emir submitted to Imperial rule and such gifts as the present item were presented by the Emirs to the Tsars and other members of the Imperial court until the reign of Nicholas II.
