Description
- KPM mark in underglaze blue, green painter's dash, the saucer impressed 2
- height cup 9.5cm, box 26 by 21.5 by 15.5cm.
abundantly decorated in gold with stylized palmettes, laurel wreaths and scrolls between gold bands, under a border of oak and a gilt rim, set against a matt royal blue ground; the cup with the portrait bust of Wilhelm I. within an oval gilt medaillon, the handle terminating in two intertwined snakes; in original ebonised wooden box lined in grey satin, the glass cover displaying a letter by Wilhelm of Prussia, handwritten in Berlin on January 28th, 1819 with its sealed envelope
Condition
The cup with minor rubbing to prominent part of the handle, the glass of the display cover of the box broken in three pieces, minor srcatching and rubbing (edges) to the ebonized box, the lining in aged condition, no key, the letter aged, with damages and and fox marks.

Catalogue Note
According to the accompanying letter of thanks, cup and saucer were a personal gift from the young Wilhelm I. of Prussia (1797-1888), who in 1871 became the first German Emperor.
