A fine and rare mahogany desk, neoclassical, attributed to Johannes Klinkerfuss, Stuttgart circa 1800

of very elegant form, surmounted by a central well formed by an architectural archway and flanked by drawers on either side, two drawers below the writing surface flanked and set apart by fluted ornament inlaid in brass, borders trimmed in ogee-moulded brass supported on tapering legs of square cross-section

In restored condition, minor rubbing to writing surface, small dent to brass trim below right lower drawer.

Form and function were the main concerns of Johannes Klinckerfuß designs. These two parameters are present in all his works, thus anticipating a principle usually ascribed to a later period and only recently identified as phenomenon already present around 1800. The desk offered here is a fine example of the makers' incredible talent to find an elegant and timeless form for a predefined function.
