Description
- height 109cm., width 134cm., depth 74cm.
solidly constructed and carved from beechwood, the sides formed by winged and horned lions above circular medallions of laurel incorporating a lyre with eagle-headed finials, the back lightly curved, centred by a wreath of laurel incorporating musical instruments, the rectangular border formed by acanthus incorporating tambours, the corners formed by columns rising from lancette-shaped leaves and topped by spheres, the backrest and the seat à deux corps upholstered and covered in golden coloured silk fabric worked in blue with a wreath of laurel incorporating an urn

Condition
Loss and rubbing to original gilding throughout, the fabric in very fragile condition, small section of carving missing from one wing. Downcurved arms with cracks of dryness due to construction.

Catalogue Note
The design of this sofa certainly is inspired by Schinkel's work around 1825. Winged lions of the very same design, also horned, form the ends of a stone bench outside the palace at Charlottenburg. Schinkel, who is better known as designing light and elegant furniture, did at this time draw with heavy dependence on the Antique, specifically classical Roman art.
