Description
- Gérard de Lairesse
- An allegory of the four seasons: spring;summer;autumn;winter
- a set of four, all oil on canvas
- each: approx. 40.5 by 33 cm.
Condition
The illustrations are representative for the actual paintings. All four canvases are relined. The paint surfaces are abraded and suffered from dryness. Scattered minor spots of paint loss are visible throughout and on all four paintings, but no major damages are visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is covered with a glossy varnish.
Inspection under UV-light reveals retouchings throughout, but predominantly in the sky and in the drapery of the figures, as well as in the faces of Winter and Summer. The varnish seems to be unevenly cleaned. Offered in a set of four ornate gilt wood frames, in fair condition. (JD)
