charged with the coat-of-arms of the sitter centre right
inscribed with the name of the sitter, signed and dated on the reverse: Joan Theodor de Bolen natus/6:aug 1714; Beckencamp gemahlt/n:d:leben 1752.- oil on canvas, unlined
- 84 by 72 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is a bit darker in tone and has less contrast in the colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined. Several smaller patches are attached to the reverse. Thinness occurs in the green hues of the sitter's attire. Filled and restored damages visible to the naked eye along the upper edge and in the face. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned restorations and reveals additional retouchings in the hair, lower part of the uniform and in the background areas. The dirty and old varnish layer seems to be unevenly cleaned. Offered in a ornate, ebony gilt wood frame, small damages lower left and upper right corner. (JD)
