Description
- a pair, both oil on canvas, unlined
- each: approx. 107.5 by 169.5 cm.
Condition
The actual paintings have less contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests. Both canvasses are unlined. In the painting of David playing the harp before Saul, a horizontal seam running through the middle is clearly visible to the front. There's one small tear of approximately 1.5 centimeters in the upper left corner as well as a slightly smaller tear to the lower right corner. In the painting of David dancing before the ark two horizontal seams are clearly visible to the front in the upper half as well as in the lower half of the painting. There is a tear of approximately 7 centimeters in the upper right corner and another tear of approximately 10 centimeters in the upper left corner. Both paintings are covered with an extremely dry and old varnish layer. There is significant flaking throughout and several spots of paint loss. The paint surface needs to be stabilized. The paint surface is covered with a layer of dirt. The paintings are offered in a plain gold painted frame. (MW)
