Description
- Hyacinthe Rigaud
- Portrait of King Louis XIV (1638 - 1715), bust length, wearing armour
oil on canvas
- 42.2 by 32.9 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is more red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined (glue). Thinness is visible, especially in the background. Discoloured retouchings visible in the face and to the left and in the right background. The cuirass and ornamention is well preserved. The painted surface is under a dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light confirms the abovementioned retouchings as well as minor ones in the hair, in the blue band and arm. Offered in a decorative, gilded frame with a small damage on the right.
