A fine cast plaster medallion with a portrait of Czar Alexander I, by Fyodor Tolstoi (1783-1873) dated 1814

depicting the Czar as Rodomysl, an ancient Slavic deity of  courage, wisdom and justice; the lower border with the signature THEODORUS COMES DE TOLSTOI FORMABAT ET SCALPEBAT MDCCCXIV, frames, with inventory numbers S. 14388 in blue and r.41221 in red

In overall good condition. Some minor surface soiling to the plaster, some typical minor chips to the outer rim. Dated on the inner plaster frame (lower right) "MDCCCXIV". Containted in period frame with old glass, the wooden reverse attached with old nails.

The medaillon, designed by one of the most important Russian medallists and sculptors, was created as part of a group of twenty allegorical medaillons commemorating the Patriotic War in 1812.
