Description

  • the crucifixion
  • oil on copper, a fragment

  • 198 by 113.5 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is less bright in the colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting consists of two copper plates, joined horizontally. The join is reinforced by a copper strip attached to the reverse of which the bolts are visible to the front. The plate has minor indentations throughout. Spots of oxidation come to the fore in the lower right, as shown in the catalogue illustration. A diagonal scratch of circa 50 cm is running in the upper centre and a smaller one in the vault above the cross. A horizontal scratch is noticeable in the lower right. Minor spots of paint loss throughout, especially in the architectural sections of the composition. Larger filled and restored damages visible to the naked eye throughout,e.g along the joint and in the centre of the composition and smaller ones in the drapery of the figures. The paint surface is covered with a dirty and old varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned restorations and reveals additional ones in the figure of Christ, in the sky and in the centre left as well as in the foreground areas. Offered in a gilt metal frame, in fair condition. (JD)
