The illustration in the catalogue is representative of the actual painting. The canvas has a stable relining. The paint surface is slightly flattened, due to the relining, and has grown very dry, which has resulted in a tendency towards cupping. The darker tones are slightly abraded. The paint surface is under a thick layer of varnish as well as under a fine layer of dirt. Inspection under ultra violet light is obscured by the dirty varnish layer, but does reveal scattered retouchings to the background, and some smaller retouchings in the centre area.
