The actual painting is warmer in tone and less contrastful than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. The paint surface is covered under a fine layer of dirt and a slightly discoloured layer of varnish. The paint surface is slightly abraded to the upper right. It is flattened, due to the relining, and has a slight tendency towards cupping. Otherwise, the paint surface seems to be in fair condition. A horizontal seam can be seem running from the left to the right edge, approximately 20 centimeters above the lower edge. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals scattered retouchings, e.g. to the centre, to the upper edge and to the background in the sky. Offered in a later plain wooden frame in fair condition. Sigmund Graf Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden (see Provenance) was an art collector and as such also an honouree member of the Wallraf- Richartz-Museum in Cologne. He was the Regierungspräsident (1922-1926) of Cologne and because of his position was in close contact with Germany's first president, Friedrich Ebert and Konrad Adenauer, later German chancellor.
