Catalogue Note

Fish is not only a typical Dutch food but also the traditional Catholic lenten dish. The motif of "big fish eating little fish", well-known from prints by Pieter Breughel the Elder (ca. 1525-1569) ("De grote vissen eten de kleine"), depicts a Dutch proverb meaning that the rich often "swallow" the poor.
