Description

  • St John together with a donor and two children;St Elisabeth together with a donor and a young lady
  • a pair, both oil on panel, set into one frame
  • each: approx. 74 by 24.4 cm.

Condition

The illustration is representative for the actual painting, although the painting is a bit yellower than the illustration suggests. Both panels are cradled. Left panel: abrasion is visible throughout, but especially in the sky and background areas. The paint surface is under a fine and dense cracquelure and some spots of paint loss are visible in the red drapery in the centre, in the landscape, and along the bottom edge in the centre of which some have been repaired and as shown in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under UV-light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, but some small retouchings are revealed in the architectural elements, both in the upper and bottom parts. The paint surface is under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Right panel:abrasion is visible throughout, but especially in the sky and background areas. There is a crack running of approx 15 cm to the bottom edge in the lower right. The paint surface is under a fine and dense cracquelure as well and some spots of paint loss are visible in the figure and drapery of the St. Elizabeth and in the donor. Inspection under UV-light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, however some smaller retouchings are revealed in the architectural elements as well. The paint surface is under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Offered in the frame as shown in the catalogue illustration, in good condition with a few tiny chips. (JD)
