Catalogue Note
Matthias Harder (2001, p. 99) says that an earlier nude on the Parthenon featuring the dancer Mona Paeva, which was published in the French magazine L'Illustration in 1929, provoked ' great indignation among conservative Athenians'. The present, rather more studied group, featuring the Hungarian dancer Nicolsca, was doubtless made to capitalise on that notoriety.
