Catalogue Note

Andreas Gursky is a political and, specifically, an environmental artist.  His view of the fragility of man in the face of what man has wrought is becoming a central attitude of our times.  Gursky has been enquiring into macroeconomic disconnections for many years.  Already in 1995 it was impossible to see this surprisingly grim view of Gran Canaria without understanding the artist to be saying that all was not well with the world.  And that message has grown nothing but louder through Gursky's triumphant progression since.
