This wonderfully expressive portrait of Brandt in a looming dark register so deliberately untypical of Bailey, was clearly intended as a brilliant hommage to Brandt's own manner. There are within British photography many more obvious successors to Bill Brandt by subject-matter, yet few have equalled the sheer exuberant skill of Bailey.
