Catalogue Note
A variant print from the one usually published.
cf, for example, Cartier-Bresson, H., 1999, at pl. 26, where the actions of both subjects are different to those on view here.
These small prints were made to help in the selection of Cartier-Bresson's 1947 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the preparations for which were started under the mistaken impression that the photographer had died in captivity. For a full account (including the difficulties Cartier-Bresson had in obtaining paper among the post-war shortages) , cf. the Scrapbook (2006), where a letter from Cartier-Bresson to Beaumont Newhall of 25 April 1946 is reproduced: "I have printed all my pictures in 9 x 12cm it ought to make selection easier."
