Catalogue Note

This print comes originally from Chemins de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée, an album comprising works commissioned by the French government in 1861.  The album contained 69 photographs of the rail line from Lyon to the Mediterranean city of Toulon, its bridges and tunnels, and the surrounding environs.  Vienne, where the present image was made, is eighteen miles south of Lyon on the Rhone river (cf. Malcolm Daniel, The Photographs of Édouard Baldus, pp. 80 and 241).
