Catalogue Note
The photographs that Kertész made of Paris in the years directly after his arrival in 1925 show the young Hungarian photographer's fascination with every aspect of the city. He photographed voraciously, and printed most of his photographs in a small format on carte-postale photographic paper. The photograph offered here, an engaging image of clowns at the Fête Foraine rendered on carte-postale paper, is wholly characteristic of his early work in the city. Kertész sent another print of this image to his future wife, Elizabeth Saly, whom he had left behind in Budapest
