Catalogue Note

Stankowski's photograph of a tailor's mannequin served as a point of departure for an extensive series of 39 photo-collages by the photographer which he called Visual Plans with 1 Photo.  In the series, begun in 1933, Stankowski modified the mannequin photograph in a variety of ways: enlarging, reducing, multiplying, blurring, and solarizing it, as well as bisecting it, and transforming it into a negative.  He added collage elements that included other photographs - of scissors, and a smokestack - as well as typography, geometric shapes, and a musical score.  The series is surprisingly diverse given that each image takes the same photograph as its starting point.  The entire series is reproduced in Stankowski 06: Aspects of His Oeuvre (pp. 190-91).
