Catalogue Note
Zeitprotokoll mit Auto (Time Protocol with Car), one of Stankowski's best-known images, was made just after his arrival in Zürich in 1929 to work at the cutting-edge advertising agency, Max Dalang. Having completed his studies at the Folkwang School in Essen, western Germany's answer to the Bauhaus, Stankowski became the most progressive graphic designer in Zürich--one of the Zürich 'Konkretes'--among the first to introduce the oblique into poster design and other printed media. Zeitprotokoll mit Auto anticipates the importance of the oblique angle in Stankowski's work and is an example of his photographic experimentation with blurring and distortion. In later years, Stankowski would become famous for his 1974 Deutsche Bank logo—a diagonal slash within a square.
