Description

  • Aaron Siskind
  • 'chicago 59' (storefront)
signed, titled, and dated by the photographer in pencil on the reverse, matted, 1952, printing date unknown

Provenance

The photographer to Carl Chiarenza

Acquired from the above by Andrew Roth at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, East Hampton, New York

Acquired by Nancy Richardson from the above, 1997

Condition

This photograph is on double-weight paper with a semi-glossy finish. It is in excellent condition. The relatively bright look of the paper and the style of Siskind's signature have led us to believe that this is not a print made circa 1952, the date of the negative. A comparison with other Siskind prints in the Richardson collection that are documented 1950s prints shows a number of differences in print quality and presentation. However, it should be noted that this print does not appear to fluoresce when examined under a black light, suggesting the absence of optical brighteners in the paper.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

This photograph comes originally from the collection of Carl Chiarenza, author of the definitive study of Siskind's life and work, Aaron Siskind: Pleasures and Terrors (Boston, 1982).  A photographer, Chiarenza studied under Minor White at the Rhode Island School of Design, from which he graduated in 1957.  He completed his doctoral thesis on Aaron Siskind at Harvard in 1973.  He has taught art and art history at Boston University and the University of Rochester.

A related photograph by Siskind, showing a different portion of the same heavily lettered storefront, is reproduced in Chiarenza's book as plate 156, and titled Lithuanian Shoemaker 3.
