Condition

The canvas has an old lining. There are three large patches to the reverse and approximately 11 further smaller patches in various places all relating to old damages. There appears to have been a full length tear running vertically just left of centre which has been repaired. There is paint loss to the lower left section and elsewhere. Nails are visible to the extreme edges in places. There are stretcher marks visible. Craquelure throughout the canvas. The paint is thin in places. There is surface dirt to the work. Ultraviolet light reveals areas of retouching throughout. Held in a decorative wooden frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

Patron saint of Poland and Lithuania. He was born in 1460. The young prince was trained in spirituality and displayed holiness at an early age. When he was ordered to lead an army against King Matthias I Corvinus and seized the Hungarian throne, he refused.
