Description

  • a hunting still life with a snipe, a hare, a wooden cockerel, a chicken and a cat, all on a wooden ledge
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old relining, evidence of which is visible at the edges. There is paint loss to the lower edge and to the head of the bird just right of centre. There are further minor surface abrasions in places. There appears to be an old reapired tear in the upper left section. There are some faint marks to the surface in the lower left and central section. The paint is thin in places. There is evidence of craquelure to throughout the paint surface. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered flecks of old retouching to various areas as well as a thick varnish. Held in a decorative gold painted frame in fair condition.
