Catalogue Note
Throughout his long life, Menzel made regular summer trips, primarily travelling through Germany, Austria and France. He is known to have visited Würzburg at least twice towards the end of his life, in 1890 and 1901. Stylistically, however, this drawing seems closer to the artist's earlier works, so perhaps he also went there on an earlier journey. On the hill in the background is the Residenz, home of the famous ceiling decorations by Tiepolo.
