Catalogue Note

Johannes Bronckhorst was the eldest of a celebrated trio of natural history artists from Hoorn, who also had parallel careers as pastry bakers.  The other two were his pupil Herman Henstenburgh and the latter's son, Anton (see the following lot).   For a fine group of drawings by these artists, and a fuller account of their careers, see the sale catalogue of the Unicorno Collection, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 19 May 2004, lots 190-203.
