Condition

Good overall condition. Dirty needs cleaning and restauration. Several small lacks and old restaurations scattered on the surface. Repaints all along the four edges. There are many cracks on the dress of the standing man. Some of them feeld-in with repaints. There is a peint lack on the last three letters of the signature (visible on illustration).

Catalogue Note

Jan Baptist Huysmens fut élève a l'Académie des Beaux Arts d'Anvers de 1843 à 1849. Il voyagea ensuite en Grèce, Turquie, Syrie, Palestine, Egypte et Algérie. Ses tableaux orientalistes représentent des scènes très animées et vivantes avec des coloris puissants et des détails de costumes et d'architectures bien observés. 
Un autre tableau de même sujet a été exposé à l'Exposition Universelle de 1889 à Paris, et présenté au Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris 1890 n°1236, reproduit au catalogue illustré p.181sous le titre A huis-clos rue du Caire (voir l'illustration ci-dessous).
