Condition

Original canvas. Several tiny holes and paint lacks mainly in the upper part of the painting, visible on the catalogue illustration. Few repaints mainly in the background and in some of the copper pieces. Signature looks straightened or added.

Catalogue Note

Nicola Forcella vécut en Egypte pendant de nombreuses années et il devint professeur à l'école des Arts Appliqués Khédiviale. Il est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs peintres orientalistes italiens travaillant en Egypte à la fin du XIXème siècle. Dans son ouvrage Gli' Italiani nella civiltà egiziana del secolo XIX ( Alexandrie 1906) l'écrivain C.A. Balboni cite parmi ses oeuvres importantes Le marchand de cuivre, peut être le tableau présenté ici (cf: Caroline Juler, Les Orientalistes de l'école italienne, ACR éditions Courbevoie 1992 page 135).
