Théodore Frère fut l'un des meilleurs orientalistes du Salon de Paris où il exposa de 1834 à 1882. Charles Théodore Frère fut l'un des initiateurs du mouvement orientaliste exposant en 1839 deux vues d'Alger au Salon des Champs Elysées.
Il voyagea en 1851en Nubie, Syrie, Palestine et Egypte. Le point d'orgue de ses pérégrinations exotiques a lieu en 1869 lors de l'inauguration du Canal de Suez, où le Gotha de la peinture orientaliste est réuni: Gérôme, Fromentin, Tournemine, Berchère entre autres.
