When this work last appeared on the market in 1987 (see Provenance) it was attributed to Jean Marchand, an artist mentioned by Michel Faré (see M. Faré, La vie silencieuse en France, Fribourg 1976, p. 296) and active in Paris during the second half of the 18th century.
