Condition
The canvas has a firm and fairly old relining. The paint surface is in reasonable condition with some areas of wear, notably centre right and centre left. There are some discoloured retouchings in the hat and the tunic and a small restored scratch lower right. Inspection under ultra violet light revealS a few further scattered retouchings. Offered in a period frame which is somewhat chipped and has suffered some wear.

The painting should be compared to a similar signed composition depicting the same sitter by a pupil of Rembrandt identified by Sumowski as the 'Monogrammist HVT' in the Museum Narodowe, Warsaw (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, Landau/Pfalz 1983, vol. VI, p. 4004, cat. no. 1389).
