Description

  • Juriaen Jacobsz.
  • portrait of a soldier, half-length, wearing a buff surcoat and breastplate and holding a baton
  • signed lower left: J Jacobs fec
  • oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is generally secure with fine craquelure throughout. Inpection under UV light reveals some retouchings to the darker areas of the background and details of the sitter's face and sash, and other scattered retouchings throughout, in particular below the sitter's chin, where there seems to be a restored vertical scratch of approximately 30 cm. Overall in fairly good condition. Offered in a carved wood frame which has suffered from some knock and paint losses, particularly to the right hand side.
