Description

  • Otto van Veen
  • 'Christ blessing the little children'
  • oil on panel, in a Salvator Rosa carved and gilt wood frame

Condition

The support consists of three horizontal panels, kept stable by three vertical batons and six blocks along each join. There is a split along the centre right of the central panel and this is kept stable by three canvas joins. The painting is not too dirty but the varnish is slightly discoloured. The paint surface is in reasonable condition, although the panel joins and crack are evident. There are discoloured retouchings scattered throughout the painting, largely as a result of isolated paint losses and paint loss on the panel joins and crack. These are clearly visible under ultraviolet light. The blue pigment in some of the figures' dress (eg the woman holding her baby, just left of Christ) has oxidised. The lot is offered in a carved and gilt wood Salvator Rosa frame which is structurally sound but has suffered some knocks and wear.
