Condition

The single copper panel is laid down on board. The paint surface is secure with some minor scattered paint losses. The paint has been a little abraded in some areas, notably in the faces of the central figures and the central area of the trees. Some areas where the paint has thinned appear to be retouched however the varnish prevents further examination under UV light. Offered in a modern painted wooden frame in good condition.

The composition derives from Elsheimer's The Flight into Egypt in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv. no. 216 (see RĂ¼diger Klessmann, Adam Elsheimer 1578-1610, exh. cat., London, 2006, p. 174, cat. no. 36).

The subject is taken from the book of Tobit, chapter V.
