Description

  • Steven van der Meulen
  • Portrait of a gentleman, half length, wearing black and holding a pack of cards
  • oil on panel
Half length, standing, wearing a black doublet and hat, holding playing cards

Provenance

Ingoldt family, Strasbourg, their wax seal on the reverse.

Condition

The painting appears to be painted on a single piece of timber which has been cradled on the reverse. There are some vertical cracks in the panel. These appear to be quite minor. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals the work to be in generally good condition for a painting of its age. There are some scattered retouchings, as well as some touches of repaint to the left of the sitter's cheek, through his left ear, and on his neck. Held in a black wood frame.
