Description

  • 'Sine Bacchus fregit Venus'
  • oil on canvas

  • 86.7 by 61.7 cm.; 34 1/8 by 24 1/4 in.

Condition

The original is warmer and lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been fairly recently relined and the relining is sound although the whole is a little loose on the stretcher. The paint surface is well preserved overall but is quite dirty and would benefit from a light surface clean. Some parts of the sky appear to have been lightly strengthened and inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some minor restrengthening to the foreground and foliage. Sold with a plain modern gilt frame, in fair condition.
