The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure despite fine cracquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings along the lines of the cracquelure under the varnish. There is more recent retouching to a restored hole to the left of Joseph's right foot. Offered in a later painted wooden frame with some knocks and paint losses.

The composition of the present lot derives, with minor differences, from the original by Giaquinto in Taranto, Palazzo Arcivescovile (see C. Strinati, E. Gabrielli et al., Giaquinto, Florence 1993, p. 179, cat. no. 30).
