Description

  • Etienne Jeurat
  • A lady at her toilet with her maid
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, New York, Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1958, lot 99, as Etienne Jeurat;
Robert and Bettina Suida Manning, New York.

Exhibited

Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, Eighteenth Century European Painting from the Collection of Suida Manning, 1966, no. 25.

Condition

The canvas has an old stable relining. The paint surface is in a stable condition although there is a vertical scratch lower centre of approximately 10 cm. Some localised strengthenings and retouchings are apparent to the naked eye and inspection under ultraviolet light does not reveal any further retouchings, probably due to the thick, slightly discoloured masking varnish. The lot is offered in an elaborate carved, wood frame which has suffered some paint losses.
