Condition

Both of the canvases have been quite recently relined and are structurally sound. The paint surface is in reasonable condition although a little abraded in places. The thick glossy varnish prevents satisfactory inspection under ultraviolet light although a few recent retouchings do flouresce. The paintings are offered in painted wooden frames in reasonable condition.

Catalogue Note

Studio variants of the panels depicting Music and Architecture from the celebrated set of four pictures representing allegories of the Arts, commissioned by Madame de Pompadour for the Salon de Compagnie in the Château de Bellevue, and painted by Carle van Loo in 1752-53 (see P. Rosenberg and M. Sahut, Carle Van Loo, Première Peintre du Roi, exhibition catalogue, 1977, pp. 70-71, nos. 125-8). The originals are now in the Legion of Honour Museum, San Francisco.
