Description

  • Venetian School, late 16th century
  • The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint Elizabeth
  • oil on panel, unframed

Condition

The painting is slightly warmer and redder in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is uncradled, bowed, but stable and made of one plank. The lower left corner is renewed and the addition measures approximately 1 cm. by 3 cm. As does the upper right corner where the addition measures 0.5 by 1 cm. There is a thin layer of dirt and slightly discoloured varnish. The paint surface is in good condition, there is a small scratch to the centre and a minor paint loss to the lower centre. There are several minor discoloured retouches visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals minor retouches scattered throughout the composition, extensive retouches to the lower right and some additional strengthening to the shadows. Offered without frame.
