Description
- Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino
- Saint Agatha
- oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame
Condition
The canvas has a fairly old relining. The relining has two seams running horizontally about 20 cm from the upper and lower edges. The paint surface is under a layer of discoloured varnish. There are some areas of paint loss to the sleeve and in the flowers. There is some frame abrasion along the lower edge and there are some areas of abrasion in the background. Retouchings are present in the saint's clothing and face. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals further localised retouchings and strengthenings in the background and flowers. Offered in a later gilt wood frame with several chips and paint losses.
