  • Portrait of George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), head and shoulders, wearing a richly embroidered doublet and a blue sash

Condition

The canvas is laid down on board. There is a restored tear to the left of the sitter's right eye of aprox 8cm and there are other minor scattered paint losses. There is also some frame abrasion along the lower edge and the paint has thinned in some areas and has subsequently been retouched. Thorough inspection under UV light is impeded by the varnish but some recent retouching to the sitter's collar and along the lower edge are visible. Offered in a decorative later wood frame in fair condition.
