Description

  • A wooded river landscape with figures on a path in the foreground, a windmill beyond
  • stamped on the reverse of the panel with wax seals bearing the arms of the Duke of OrlĂ©ans and the Imperial arms of Napoleon III of France (1852 - 1870).

Condition

The single panel is cradled and flat. The paint surface is generally sound although there is a horizontal crack of approximately 45 cm. lower right and some minor paint losses and scratches. There is small crack in the upper left corner of approximately 3 by 1 cm which has held down by the cradling. The varnish has somewhat discoloured. Inspection under UV light reveals older and more recent retouchings throughout, particularly to the sky although the varnish hinders thorough examination of the older retouchings. Offered in a later wood frame painted black which is in fair condition with some minor knocks.
